Khumba, La Cebra Sin Rayas. Gussi Cinema

Es la segunda película de animación 3D lanzada por el estudio sudafricano Triggerfish, mismo estudio que en 2012 presentó exitosamente “Zambezia”.  Bajo la dirección de Anthony Silverston, en esta nueva historia se presenta a “Khumba” (del zulu que significa “piel”), una cebra que solo tiene la mitad de sus rayas. 
Desde su nacimiento, la manada está convencida de que una “medio cebra” es señal de mala suerte, así que mientras crecía, Khumba siempre recibió malos tratos, pero todo empeora cuando una sequía azota el Karoo (el lugar donde viven estas cebras).  Cansado de esa vida de maltratos, encuentra la guía de una mantis religiosa la cual le dice que existe una charca mágica que podía darle las rayas que le faltaban. Así, la cebra con la mitad de sus rayas emprende una aventura en la búsqueda por ser aceptado por su manada.

Is the second film from south african 3D animation studio Triggerfish, same that in 2012 succesfully launched “Zambezia”. Under Anthony Silverston direction, this new story introduces “Khumba” (from zulu that means “skin”), a zebra that's only half striped. From his birth, the herd is convinced that a “half zebra” is a bad luck sign, so, as he grew, Khumba alwas was mistreated, but everything gets worst when a drought plagues the Karoo (the place where this zebras live). Tired of the abuse, he finds the guidance of a praying mantis, which tells him there is a magic water hole that could give him his missing stripes. Like that, this half striped zebra embarks on an adventure in the search of being accepted by his herd

En el camino encuentra a un ñu sobreprotector de nombre Mama V y un avestruz inseguro por no poder volar llamado Bradley, quienes lo acompañarán en su viaje. Así también encontrarán una manda emigrante de Springbok, un conejo ribereño en peligro de extinción y una oveja solitaria. Mientras, en las sombras, el leopardo Phango estará siguiendo los pasos de este extraño trío, bajo la creencia de que atrapar a una cebra medio rayada lo convertirá en el cazador más poderoso que haya existido.   Si bien es una película para niños con grandes momentos de humor familiar, no por eso deja de tener un mensaje importante dirigido a chicos y grandes. El argumento central de esta historia es algo con lo que la mayoría puede identificarse. En palabras del director se trata de la importancia y el proceso que conlleva “sentirnos cómodos en nuestra propia piel”. Además de hablar de esa experiencia, a través de esta historia se buscó que los pequeños conocieran la importancia del ser tolerantes, sin importar como la apariencia o la forma de pensar de los demás.

On the way he meets an overprotective wildebeest named Mama V and an insecure Ostrich named Bradley, who will be joining him on his trip. So too will find an immigrant herd from Springbok, an endangered riverine rabbit and a lone sheep. Meanwhile, in the shadows, leopard Phango will be following the footsteps of this strange trio, believing that catching a zebra with half of his stripes will make him the most powerful hunter ever. Althoug it is a children's film with great moments of family comedy, this still has an important message to children and adults. The plot of this story is something that most people can get related to. In the words of the director, is the importance and the process involved on “feeling comfortable in our own skin”. Besides talking about this experience, through this story was sought that kids knew the importance of being tolerant, no matter how others look or the way they think.

El ubicar una historia de animación 3D en un escenario y animales que existen en la realidad implican no solo la imaginación de los realizadores, sino también de un exhaustivo trabajo de investigación y observación. En “Khumba” el cuidado en los detalles tales como los escenarios del Karoo o la realización de sus personajes muestra la madurez que van adquiriendo en estudios Triggerfish a través de sus proyectos.  La música de Bruce Retief acompaña esta travesía de manera muy singular. El como fueron incluidas distintas armonías sudafricanas y lograron unificar todos estos distintos estilos y sonidos en una misma historia, ayuda a transmitir el mensaje de como nuestras diferencias, en armonía, pueden enriquecer nuestras vidas.

Locating a 3D animation story on a landscape and with animals that actually exist, needed not only from the imagination of the filmmakers, but also from an exhaustive research and observation. In “Khumba”, paying attention to details, like Karoo scenarios, or how they made up their characters, shows the maturity that Triggerfish have gotten through their proyects.

The music from Bruce Retief accompanies this journey in a very singular way. How the different south african harmonies were included and how they came to unify all this different styles and sounds in just one story, it helps getting the message about how our differences, in harmony, may enrich our lives.
